If the Windows 2000 system boots to the error:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
Then the registry has been corrupted. This is most likely caused by sudden power loss while the system was operating normally. To repair this issue, it is necessary to use the attached (see below) W2K Registry Repair CD. Creating the CD using iso-burner and the win2k registry repair utility.iso file
Download and unzip/extract the Iso-burner.zip file.
Run the iso-burner.exe file from the extracted folder.
Use the [...] (browse) button to select the win2k registry repair utility.iso file from your hard drive (wherever it was downloaded to).
Insert a blank CD-R disc into your CDRW drive and click the Burn ISO! button to burn the cd.
Repair the registry corruption
[W2K Registry Repair]
With both the W2K Registry Repair CD and the Win2000 OS CD (from Microsoft, ships with the DVR
) in hand, head back over to the DVR
.
Insert the W2K Registry Repair CD into the Drive and restart the DVR
As it restarts, look for a prompt that states “Press any key to boot from CD”
When you see this, please Press Any Key (you have about 2 seconds)
The screen should now go blue and state Windows XP Setup at the top… just ignore this and the information changing at the bottom.
It will stop at a screen with 3 options: <ENTER> to install, <R> to Repair, or <F3> to Quit. Press <R> to Repair
The next option should only have one choice: 1) C:\WINNT. It will ask which # you wish to repair, and you will type 1 and then hit Enter.
After a few seconds, it should state: Registry Repair Successful and ask you to reboot. Eject the W2K Registry Repair CD.
***** Reboot the system and check if it boots into Windows *****
[W2K Auto-Repair]
If it does not boot correctly into Windows, insert the Microsoft Windows2000 CD and then Restart the computer.
You will once again see the prompt to “Press any key to boot from CD”: do so
This will state Windows2000 Setup and bring you to the same 3 options as stated above, however this time you will choose <ENTER> to Install
The next page will be a license agreement: Press F8 to Accept
This last page should have a large box with Windows 2000 Professionalhighlighted. It should also mention the option ‘R’ to Repair again. Press ‘R’ to Repair when Windows 2000 Professional is highlighted.
Follow the onscreen prompts and it will go through an automated Repair then Reboot the DVR
. When it reboots, Eject the CD. Ignore the ‘Press any key to boot from CD’ if you see it (usually if you have not ejected the CD early enough).
It may boot directly into windows, or give you a prompt to click Next and then move to an automated update with a blue progress bar. This set may take a few minutes to complete.
If during this Update period the blue bar gets only 50% of the way across and reboots the machine unexpectedly, there are errors on the disk that need to be fixed. This is done through Windows2000 CD Recovery Console.
[CheckDisk through Recovery Console]
Restart the computer and you will once again see the prompt to “Press any key to boot from CD”: do so
This will state Windows2000 Setup and bring you to the same 3 options as stated above, however this time you will choose 'R' to Repair
Press <C> for Recovery Console
The screen will now go white text on a black background and ask which windows installation you wish to log in to. You must type the number “1” (no quotes) and then press <ENTER>.
When asked to “Type the Administrator Password,” type: elitedvr123456 and press <ENTER>.
Type the following, and note the spaces and forward slashes: chkdsk c: /p /r Press <ENTER>
Once the checkdisk has completed you will be back at the C:\WINNT> prompt. Type: EXIT and press <ENTER> to reboot the DVR
.
Let it boot past the message, “Press any key to boot from CD,” and wait to see if the Blue Screen error returns or if the system boots all the way to the software. If everything boots normally, problem solved. Otherwise, repeat the W2K Auto-Repair (middle section)
