Cheat Sheet for configuring networking

This is by no means complete nor a troubleshooting guide.

This IS however the method/guide that will assist in solving most basic networking setups.

Initial Questions:

  • What type of DVR is it (For Port# Reference)?

  • What is the DVR connected to (Router , modem/router , switch) and the model #?

  • What is your public IP address/external IP address?

  • Is the internet connection working from the DVR (this confirms network connectivity)?

  • Are you connecting inside a Local Area Network or from a remote location (If within a LAN, you do not need to setup port forwarding)?

***** SHUTDOWN SOFTWARE *****

Ipconfig

  • START > Run... > Type: cmd and hit Enter

  • Type ipconfig, all one word, then hit Enter.

  • What is their current IP Address?

  • What is their Default Gateway?

    • The default gateway serves 2 purposes:

      • They will need to input that number later in TCP/IP Setup

      • This is the address to connect to the router or modem/router

Locking down an IP in the TCP/IP Setup

  • Right-Click My Network Places and choose Properties

  • Right-Click Local Area Connection and choose Properties

  • Select Internet Protocol TCP/IP and click Properties

  • Select Use the Following IP Address

  • Enter in the IP Address of the unit

    • This will be the same first 3 numbers and the one found during ipconfig, however the final number will be different. (ex: 192.168.0.102 )

    • The majority of routers/networks will assign a number that is either between 1-10 or 100-110 as the final number. A Good rule of thumb is to add 20 to that number to make sure that there will be no conflicts. (ex. ipconfig found 192.168.0.12 you input in TCP/IP 192.168.0.32 )

  • The Subnet Mask should autofill, however if not it should say 255.255.255.0

  • Enter the Default Gateway you have from ipconfig

  • Under Preferred DNS Server, enter the same IP as the Default Gateway

  • Click OK, Click OK, Close Window (this will bring you back to desktop)

Setting up the router

  • Open Internet Explorer and enter in the IP you found for Default Gateway during ipconfig (e.g. it may read: http://192.168.0.1 )

  • On your computer, load http://portforward.com and click Router from the menu, select the router they have from the list, and follow the instructions to setup port forwarding.

  • Be advised, if it asks for a Public Port Range and only a single Private Port, you will have to enter them in one by one. You can only use a range of ports if it only asks for the range of ports (no mention of public/private) or provides a range for BOTH public and private

  • Ports quick-sheet: (for details on which ports do what, refer to specific documentation)
